“You must be coachable to become successful “ was the message for S.T.A.R.S. Mentors and Mentees during the Annual Men’s Day Program held at Greater Beulah Baptist Church.
On Sunday, May 3, 2009, over 1,000 people heard the stirring speech from Reverend Paul Hollman during the S.T.A.R.S. Boys to Men Honors Day Program Held at Greater Beulah Baptist Church. “Young Men, this is what your mentors are trying to do for you, is to train you to become successful men”, say Reverend R. Paul Hollman, Pastor of Greater Beulah Baptist Church. You have to listen and take instructions.
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Urban Program honored the S.T.A.R.S. mentees and their mentors for a successful year. All of the S.T.A.R.S. mentees had a successful academic school year, remain in school program and sports activities, leaders in their school and church, and some won an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C, to attend the Presidential Inauguration of President Barack Obama in January of 2009.
Agencies that support the S.T.A.R.S. Boys to Men Mentoring Program were also honored during the Men’s day program which includes: Mike Schmitz-CEO of Mike Schmitz Automotive Group. He was the Sunday Morning speaker, who gave a motivational speech on the three angels he met in his life, whose love and dedication help to be the person he is today, the first angel was his Foster mom, second angel was his fifth grade teacher and the third angel was his wife. Rosalind James, (Urban Regional Agent and coordinator for the S.T.A.R.S. Boys to Men Mentoring program) presented Mike Schmitz a plague for his support to the Boys to Men Summit held in August of 2008. The Wiregrass Foundation were given a big thank you for awarding a grant to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Urban program in 2008 to support of the first Boys to Men Summit held in the Wiregrass Region and in the State of Alabama. James presented a plague to Cheri Collins, Plant Manager for Farley Nuclear Plant, for donating $1,000 to support the members of the S.T.A.R.S. Boys to Men Mentoring Program to attend their first NBA Game in March’09 to see the Los Angeles Lakers vs. the Atlanta Hawks in Atlanta, Georgia. Michael Jackson, CEO of Dubois Institute and S.T.A.R.S. Mentors gave $500.00 in support of the S.T.A.R.S. tickets to the NBA game. Larry Mathews, City Commissioner and Don McCleod President of the City of Dothan Community Block Grant received a plaque on behalf of Maurice Head, Director of the Community Block Grant for awarding the Alabama Cooperative Extension System a grant in support of the S.T.A.R.S. Boys to Men Mentoring Program.
A Youth Career Summit was held on Sunday morning featuring successful men in the Wiregrass Region discuss their career with member’s o the S.T.A.R.S. Boys to Men Mentoring Program. The speakers included: Sam Crawford-Retired Fire Chief, Mackroyce Corbitt, Jr.-Entrepreneur Machroyce Corbitt Sr.-Entrepreneur, Thomas Davis-Dothan Police Department, Dr. Myland Brown-Author, Motivational Speaker, Scott Faulk-Assistant Principal –Honey Suckle Middle School, Don McCleod –Accountant, Delvick McKay-Interim Personnel Director for the City of Dothan, Michael Jackson-Entrepreneur, and Jamar Walton-Engineer, Dr. Byron Taylor-Physician.
